If they're supposed to be actual characters and not player inserts, then why are they silent? He and Joker from Persona 5 are the worst uses of a silent protagonist I've ever seen. I only really tolerate them in cases where the story is heavily deemphasized or in cases like Okami where the main character has a good reason for being mute and has plenty of personality to display without needing to formally speak.

Nowadays they just feel like a lazy way to get around not having to write/voice a character or avoid making the audience feel alienated. IMO silent protags are a relic of jrpgs from old. I've heard that the reason Ludger is silent is to avoid giving away a certain twist, but frankly that's kind of BS when the twist is obvious and Abyss pulled something very similar without having to make Luke a mute.Ĭhoices are fine, but not at the expense of making a character mute. The brief moment near the end of the game where you see Ludger acting and emoting like a normal person felt so much better. Ludger is clearly his own character and not a self insert, him having no speaking lines outside of NG+ and in battle just felt incredibly awkward. I'd accept it if the next mainline Tales had character creation, but in no cases I'd want a Ludger. Ludger, however, was not player-created and had backstory central to the plot, and was almost an actual character, so he should have been a non-silent MC, so I think he's the worst use of a silent MC in any game alongside Persona 5's Joker, Digital Devil Saga's Serph and all the characters who are silent when MC and non-silent when not the protagonist, because they're neither a player insert nor a character (Maya from Persona 2, Isaac and Felix from Golden Sun, most chapter protagonists in Mother 3). I would accept a silent MC in a future game only if they're player-created (Tales only had character creation in Radiant Mythology, and no mothership titles have implemented it yet). I would prefer the protagonist to have dialogue, and in fact I felt really happy when a trailer showed Alphen speaking like a normal character. What did you think about Ludger? Would you like another Ludger in a future Tales mothership game (possibly Arise 2)? Why?
